Dubai, indian village

I went to the souk in Dubai to make some shoots, at the riversite, close to the indian market. Suddenly two men offered me to take a picture of themselves, I welcomed this idea, they were very friendly. When I startet preparing my camera, even more men joined them and thats how I ended up taking this group picture.

Construction workers in Dubai, mostly recruited from countries like Bangladesh or Pakistan, use to work very hard for a very low salary. Construction workers working for Arabtec, for example, receive a basic salary of DH650 monthly. At the beginning of January, 3000 construction workers instigated a protest over wage increases at Arabtec. 70 workers who coerced their co-workers into protesting were arrested and therefore dangerous, according to the police, who argues "we cannot keep people here who create disorder." Probably nothing will change. A questions which occoured to me, when I took this picture, was: Who lives in these towers? How are the flats constructed? How much do you have to pay to live there? I found the answer in dubizzle, the main internet place for flat and room announcments. It reads: "I have a couple of options .... Full sea view 37th floor ....SUBERB FULL SEA Views from the 37th floor ... SMALL windowless 'grave' avaialble asap now for 2000 aed (400Euro) a month ... suitable for students / interns / females .... also huge master bedroom with two big sea facing windows for 6000 aed (1200 Euro) a month incl all bills. All flatmates are western cosmopolitan and professionals"
